Introduction:

The following pieces offer reflections on a range of political topics. They are roughly grouped in themes rather than in strict chronological order…  

Some are mini-essays, others take a more narrative form.  Aware that the more journalistic  bits might read like yesterday news (suitable only for the proverbial fish-wrapper) I have tried  to select journal writings that may not seem too dated… 

In organizing this material,  I was struck by the fact that my politics have not changed much over four decades. Quite in  opposition to the common tendency of a rightward drift with advancing years, my geriatric heart remains firmly on the left.  Still,  the tiny voice of the skeptic persists. 

Political urgencies may yet demand whole-hearted  commitments as yet resisted. Perhaps before the end, I may even begin wearing slogan-bearing buttons.…  

In any case,  I hope that a few of these pieces convey as much of the heart as of the head…
